A certain amount of yellow leaves on an Indoor Bonsai are completely normal, leaves on an evergreen tend to last about 3 months, then drop off and are replaced by new ones, about once a week or so go over your tree and remove any yellow leaves. If you are worried at all then just contact us.

WATERING

Fill a bowl with water at room temperature, deep enough to cover all of the soil in the pot, stand your tree in the water for about 10-15 mins, let it stand on the draining board to stop dripping, wipe the pot and return to its normal position. (using this method your tree will take the amount of water it wants, rather than what you want to give it). Just tipping water on your tree will never be enough. Water when the soil feels really dry and not before. Do not leave it standing in water for long periods and do not mist spray it.

POSITIONING YOUR TREE

Your tree needs plenty of light (i.e. the brightest window you have). Without enough light growth will be leggy. Any warm bright area will do, if there is only one light source, i.e. one window, turn your tree round once a week to get even growth. When you find a place your tree likes leave it there, you will know it's happy because it will grow many new shoots and flourish.

FERTILISER

All Bonsai need fertiliser to make up for the lack of nutrients normally found in the wild, use either a specially formulated Bonsai Food, or a weak mixture of Phostrogen plant food. Feed every 2 weeks from March till October. Always water your Bonsai before feeding or you will burn the roots and damage the tree.

PRUNING YOUR TREE

Your tree needs pruning all year round, more so in the summer months. Cut off new shoots once they grow to about 3-4 inches long, prune between a leaf joint to maintain its original shape. (if you require more information on pruning please contact us and we will arrange to show you on your tree).

HOLIDAY CARE

We run a holiday care scheme here in Southampton, you can leave your trees with us while you jet off to warm sunny climes safe in the knowledge that you won't have to come back to the neighbour saying 'I did water them honest'. We will charge you £1.00 per week per tree. Most Bonsai Nurseries offer this service if you live too far from us.

COMMON PROBLEMS

Brown crisp leaves: Lack of water, follow watering instructions above.

Every leaf turning yellow: Over watering, as above.

Glossy, sticky leaves: Your tree may have Aphids, such as Whitefly or greenfly, check under leaves for both insects and eggs. To treat spray with a soap wash, (2-3 drops of washing up liquid per litre of water) spray under the leaves about every 3 days, this should encourage them to leave.

Remember we are here to help you, and we are always pleased to hear from you.
